LEAVENWORTH — Glass recycling has resumed at the Leavenworth Recycling Center after pausing amid management changes.
Management of the Leavenworth Recycling Center recently transitioned to the nonprofit organization Sustainable NCW after the City of Leavenworth’s contract with Waste Loop ended in September.
The change resulted from Waste Loop’s organizational changes. The nonprofit recently merged its waste reduction education programs into Sustainable NCW and transitioned into Eastside Rebuild, which continues as a separate nonprofit.
Sustainable NCW is now carrying Waste Loop’s glass recycling forward. The organization says it is able to haul the glass to Seattle, thanks to Sibelco’s recent purchase of the glass recycling facility, Strategic Materials.
Glass hauling is supported by community donations. The organization suggests a $5 donation per 15-pound box of glass from individuals and businesses, which is approximately 12 wine bottles, 24 beer bottles or 20 mixed glass jars and bottles.
Only clean bottles and jars are accepted; the recycling center does not take window glass, Pyrex or heat-treated glass. Leavenworth Recycling Center’s winter hours are Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
