Cashmere student taken into custody after social media threat against other students

Posted

CASHMERE — A Cashmere student was taken into custody Nov. 4 after investigators determined the student had sent a social media message expressing a desire to harm other students, according to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said they had no information indicating any students were in imminent danger and reported no current threat to the school or community.

Cashmere school administrators contacted the Sheriff’s Office at approximately 11 a.m. about a threatening message reportedly sent by a student. Deputies and a detective responded to the school and met with administrators to investigate.

During that investigation, deputies determined the student had sent the message to a third party through social media. The Sheriff’s Office described the message as expressing a desire to harm other students but did not release its wording or identify the social media platform involved.

Based on the information investigators gathered, the student was taken into custody and transported to the Chelan County Juvenile Detention Facility.

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the student or specify which Cashmere school was involved. Its announcement also did not list any potential charges or provide additional details about the students referenced in the message.

The agency said it would take appropriate action to protect school safety if additional information indicated a credible threat.

The Sheriff’s Office credited school administrators for promptly reporting the incident and encouraged anyone with information about potential threats to student safety to report it to law enforcement immediately. The announcement did not provide further details about how administrators learned of the message.
