Antojitos El Chulo packs ‘em in at old Brewster theater

Posted

The old RIO Theater building at 507 Main Street has not shown a movie since 2009, but the place is once again a hub of activity thanks to Antojitos El Chulo, a new coffee and specialty drink spot that opened its door less than two months ago.

The popular new business held its grand opening on May 24, and since then has expanded its operating hours from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day to accommodate customer demand.

Antojitos El Chulo is the brainchild of Marcia and Jesus Diaz who incubated an idea to start a business in Brewster as they looked for both a location and an overlooked opportunity. The business serves coffee, specialty drinks, and Mexican snacks. “We thought about it because here in Brewster there was really nothing (like it),” said Marcia. ‘It was really just random. We just started everything up in April.”

Selecting the location in the vacant RIO Theater building was an easier decision.

“It was the only space available,” Marcia said.

With such a wide selection of snacks and drinks it took a moment for Marcia to single out a frontrunner.

“I think people really come in for the bobas,” said Marcia referring to a drink with tapioca pearls. “We’ve had a lot of people from Manson and Chelan come up here just for it.”

The initial customer response has been very encouraging.

“Overall, it has been very amazing,” said Marcia of both numbers of people and the distances traveled.

Marcia graduated Bridgeport High School in 2013 and Wenatchee Valley College in 2021 as a sustainable agriculture/tree fruit production specialist. In addition to Antojitos La Chula she maintains a full-time job as a supervisor for Zirkle Fruit Company. Jesus works in construction.
